L'Incidente

n.
1. a. An unexpected and undesirable event, especially one resulting in damage or harm: car accidents on icy roads.
b. An unforeseen incident: A series of happy accidents led to his promotion.

On July 8th, I had an unforeseen incident on the REAL Street of Dreams resulting in a very serious injury to my right knee - so I’d like to share my explorations into accidents.

You can see by the popular definition that accidents are binary by nature, they can be a happy surprise or an unfortunate event and perhaps one contains the other. But either way, a big accident is a change, a break where time is divided and lives defined. Accidents are a stop.

How do we interpret accidents when they happen to us or to someone we know? Do we look for a negative reason say a punishment from a scouring God or a result of negative thoughts or emotions? Do you use New Thought teachings on taking responsibility in a way to judge and blame yourself or to distance yourself from someone who has had an accident or developed a disease?

I think some of this is natural, certainly I went over my event looking for what I did wrong, where I should have stopped, where I could have made a different choice - where I could have been in control. Yet an accident is also by nature something that is uncontrolled and healing requires a deeper level of power - letting go.

In the days after my accident, I was blessed with a lot of caring phone calls. One of my friends however brought her Louis Hayes bible (hint: there are no bibles for accidents.) As she read the list of negative emotions I must have had and read me the ‘meaning’ of accidents, I felt like I was back in Catholic school being taught that the reason bad things happen is because you are guilty and being punished. I made her stop and told her of the incredible feeling of trust in my body that I had in the moments just after the accident. How the exquisite flip in mid-air my body executed might have saved me from landing on my head and neck and how in awe I was that my body knew how to do that. Accidents teach us and I’ve seen the best way we can come to help is as a loving listener hoping to glean of another’s mysteries.

Our cover artist Corinna Zubin Lyon knows about listening. In her championship over an accident called cancer, she shares “One of the most important things that someone told me was “Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you are responsible for the cancer.’ This helped me to know what I am responsible for - I am responsible for my healing.’

A Fated Moment
One of the parts of nature I love the most is storms. Storms bring chaos, accidents - they are rejuvenating, cleansing, and clearing. Yes, sometimes there is wreckage but the forests and beach aren’t blaming and complaining, they glisten.

Packing more ice around my knee as I wondered about accidents in space and wrote to our Astrologer Numahka Swan. Here are her reflections.

“Astrology is based on order and predictable patterns. There is no disorder in the universe. If an avalanche wipes out a mountain side village - that would certainly feel and look like disorder/chaos. However the avalanche itself is simply a movement in the natural order of things. I don’t believe that the planets, stars and asteroids DO anything TO us. They are just continuing to move in the orbits as they always have. I can see how they are as small as us within the larger patterns of the universe. Astrology serves as a mirror of ours lives reflected in the universe - as above so below - or as within so without. The real issue seems to be the integration of our internal and external universes unus mundus - the unity of existence. Astrology uses an archetypal system for integrating the individual with the universe - providing a matrix and language which can assist an individual to discover their inner world. We often create in our outer world what we are experiencing in our inner world.

In nature we observe the cycles of the seasons - the continual breakdown/death - renewal/rebirth. It happens around us, in our bodies and in our hearts and minds. We experience (and are a part of the cycles). Universally we essentially are the earth we experience her place in the movement of the planets. We know that lightning is formed in the strong up-and-down air currents inside tall dark cumulonimbus clouds as water droplets, hail, and ice crystals collide with one another. The planetary energies work in a similar way. Each planet has an archetypal personality that mingles together and create a phenomenon. For example: Mars is all about moving full speed ahead, SOMETIMES without awareness of the consequences - a spontaneous, reckless need to reach a desired end. Uranus is an extremely exuberant, uncontrollable force which evokes change usually from some outside unexpected event from which we are ripped from our structures and feel hurled into the unknown. You can imagine what the possible results could be when these energies come together to form a relationship. There are a myriad of possible relationships between these energies and manifestations based on the individual reaction/interaction with them and ones own natal chart. This is just one example - there are books written which explore the direct connection between planetary combinations and the human experience throughout history.

On July 8, 2007, Jai you experienced a “fated” moment when the vertex (a turning point in the sky/our lives) passed over your dark moon - Lilith. She describes our relationship to the absolute and shows how we ‘let go’. At the same time Uranus is transiting your 9th house - calling you to shift your way of thinking and have a more flexible mind. Older books of astrology say this is a dangerous time because sudden unexpected events (accidents) may result in injury. Robert Hand in his book ‘Planets in Transit’ says, “Accidents usually happen because some energy within you is inhibited and not allowed expression through your conscious personality”. I’m not sure if I agree with this statement or not. Uranus was also conjunct your sun (your heart -vital core) calling your vital core essence to break free and express itself in ways you never have before. This is one of the most revolutionary times of your life and although your life may become more “real”, this is a time when you might feel like you are in the midst of chaos where everything changes through unexpected events outside of your control.”

Oh, those Dark Energies
My dark moon Lilith? Oh no! But this is a part of the workings of things that shamanic practitioners like Walks with Thunder and ZARA talk about. Andy literally sees negative energies, sometimes as dark spirits. “Did you see anything when you fell?” he asks. “No. I was just falling.” But I did feel all the stress, pressure, and frustration of that particular day built upon 10 months of overworking. Built up over time and by many people, he explains, this generates a pool of negative energy where accidents are more ‘available’ and then went into the specifics of the situation out at the house building program. He was right on and it was very freeing to me to listen to what he was seeing.

The Sacred Accident
Perhaps as we change, like chameleons molting, caterpillars transforming into butterflies, our accidents are time when our essence changes. (I think I’ve changed colors!) For me, I mark this event as an initiatory experience and feel the perfection of my imperfections.

Sonia Story relates an accident she had to an initiatory period in her life when she changed her name too. “ I created a name change which was very positive and joyful, full of higher vibration and much more ability to be active through the heart. The change was very very alive enabling me to live much more from my heart but 2-3 weeks after, I had an accident with a machete (I was living in Hawaii.) Through healing, I realized it was connected to the name change; the ability to clear out the old unconscious that went along with the old name. With a new name, you are more responsible for what you create. The purpose in injury and trauma creation is moving forward with our soul growth. At first I was really disappointed in myself and really judgement. But then I realized that there was so much aliveness and it was like a level of fog had cleared. Absolutely the accident really served! The sooner you accept that it happened and get the lesson, the sooner the healing. The real healing in any situation is loving! No matter what modality.”

Breaking Free
Can we accept disorder, accidents, chaos and uncontrollable events and even dark energies as a part of the natural order of the universe, the cycles of the earth, and ourselves - perhaps even as necessary shamanic incidents to make great passages?

In Pema Chodron’s book “When Things Fall Apart” (hint: notice the word ‘when’), shares one of her favorite teachings, “Only to the extent that we expose ourselves over and over to annihilation, can that which is indestructible be found in us.” She shares, “I knew that this was the spirit of true awakening, it was about letting go of everything. This is where the courage comes in.”

The Deep Down Tao
My teacher, Master NuNu has taught me (sometimes the hard way) to look deeply into my self-illusions. You can look so deeply into them that they eventually will reveal what you are trying the most to hide from - your treasures.

For me, my penetrating laser gaze into that fated moment - that shift of my body weight as I was spray painting on the deck on top of an unsecured board that flipped and fell - catapulting me into a full forward rolling mid-air rebirth - accidentally and singularly - into the deep down Tao of my destiny. Where I go from here, may win my red badge of courage.
